Dan has been in and around higher education his entire life, growing up as the son of a university professor, graduating from Penn State University and, shortly thereafter, beginning what has been a rewarding 30-year career in higher education advancement. Dan has had the privilege of serving four top-tier colleges and universities, including two large public universities, a large private university and a small private liberal arts college, and has been engaged in highly successful campaigns at each institution.
Throughout his career, Dan has developed a passion for creating values-based organizations committed to integrity, open communication, collaboration, accountability, and a strong sense of common purpose and belonging.
Dan was most recently Vice President for Advancement at Harvey Mudd College where he successfully built a healthy and productive organization by establishing a clearly defined values-based culture, clarifying roles and responsibilities, establishing policies and metrics, increasing collaboration and accountability, and heightening service to stakeholders on and off campus. Dan’s leadership built a more committed and productive team, executed a College-wide rebranding effort, increased alumni and parent engagement and spearheaded the strongest fundraising period in the College’s history, including a successful $150M campaign that surpassed its initial goal one year ahead of schedule and concluded more than $25M over goal on December 31, 2018.
Dan began his career at his alma mater during their first campaign, beginning as a front-line fundraiser in annual giving, then advancing to a Major Gift Officer for the College of Science, Director of Development for the School of Communications and Director of Development for the College of Agricultural Sciences. Dan joined the University of Texas as Executive Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations and soon moved into a broader leadership role as Assistant then Associate Vice President, leading all major and annual giving activity—centrally and across nineteen units—and developed an infrastructure and culture to support a collaborative, strategic and effective fundraising team. As Vice President of Development for University Programs and Campaign Co-Director for Emory University, Dan helped plan and lead a $1.6B capital campaign and helped significantly change the university-wide culture of Emory’s development and alumni relations operation. Prior to Harvey Mudd, Dan was a consultant to the LIVESTRONG Foundation, helping to plan for a launch of their first campaign.
Dan is from State College, Pennsylvania, and earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing from Penn State University, where his father received his MS and PhD and served for 35 years on the engineering faculty. Dan and his wife, Shanin (also a Penn State graduate), have four children, including two daughters adopted as teenagers from Russia.
